Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) is set to offload its 49% ownership of Bokoni mine to African Rainbow Minerals (ARM), it was announced on Monday. The transaction is expected to generate R3.5 billion. Amplats owns the Limpopo-based mine through a joint venture with Atlatsa Resources, which holds a 51% stake.

It has cost the company R3.5 billion rand to acquire the shares of the platinum mine at Atok outside Burgersfort in Limpopo. The negotiations started in October this year and the transaction was concluded on Monday. Bokoni Platinum Mine was shut down in 2017 and put under care and maintenance, leaving over 2 600 mine workers unemployed.

The local business owners in the Atok area, outside Burgersfort in Limpopo, say their businesses are struggling to survive since the closure of Bokoni Platinum Mine four years ago. The mine closure left more than 2 000 people unemployed.
